Integrated loudness, True Peak and dynamics explained, with a genuinely useful free meter for music, broadcast and streaming. We explore the tools, production choices and practical implications behind this announcement, with a focus on what matters in a real studio.

A peak reading does not tell the whole story

Two mixes can show similar peaks and still sound very different in perceived volume. Loudness measurement considers energy over time and provides a more reliable basis for comparing music, broadcast or streaming material. Without it, engineers risk making decisions based only on peak displays or on the changing level of their speakers.

Integrated LUFS, Short-Term, True Peak and dynamics

Integrated LUFS summarises average programme loudness, while Short-Term measurement follows shorter passages. True Peak helps reveal inter-sample peaks that may cause problems after encoding or conversion. Loudness Range offers a useful perspective on dynamics. These measurements do not replace listening; together they make the technical picture clearer.

The free version is already enough for many uses

Youlean Loudness Meter 2 offers a useful range of readings and graphical tools in its free edition, with formats suitable for common professional audio applications. For many music producers and emerging engineers this provides an excellent introduction to loudness control without having to purchase an advanced monitoring package.

Standards help, but music must stay alive

Figures such as -14, -16 or -23 LUFS are meaningful only in relation to a specific delivery platform or broadcast standard. There is no single universal target for every production. Measure carefully, follow the client's specifications and preserve the musical dynamics that serve the arrangement and emotional impact.
