Four Vac Rac flavours, saturation control and mid/side processing: a look at Kazrog’s characterful tube compressor. We explore the tools, production choices and practical implications behind this announcement, with a focus on what matters in a real studio.
Four flavours within a single plug-in
Vac Rac TSL explores different responses inspired by optical tube compression, allowing the engineer to move between subtle levelling and more pronounced colour. This flexibility matters on vocals, bass and musical buses where dynamics and tone interact. The important question is how each mode changes transients, sustain and musical movement.
The ratio runs from 2:1 to 12:1, with up to 40 dB of gain reduction stated by the developer. A THD control varies the tube contribution, from discreet levelling to more obvious saturation.

Processing for a modern mix
Saturation and mid/side possibilities make this more than a straightforward level controller. On an individual track, compression can reinforce detail and stability. On a stereo bus, a measured approach can add cohesion without narrowing the mix or sacrificing punch. Settings should always be evaluated at matched listening levels.

Kazrog also mentions an Analog Entropy feature that introduces small variations between virtual components and channels, avoiding perfect digital symmetry. Its actual value should be judged by listening, at matched output levels.
Our studio perspective: colour, not endless plug-in collecting
We appreciate analogue-inspired tools when they offer a meaningful choice of character. They should never become a substitute for balance, arrangement or thoughtful recording. The most useful compressor is the one whose response we know well enough to make quick, repeatable decisions. Vac Rac TSL looks interesting on paper; a real session is where its value will be established.

We have not yet tested Vac Rac TSL in a real session. It will be interesting to hear it on voices, strings and buses. This is a paid plug-in with a demo, not freeware; for a no-cost alternative, see our UAD Explore FREE article.
